Abstract

This study investigates semantic and pragmatic convergences and divergences between a purposive sample of Egyptian and Iraqi folk proverbs from a sociolinguistic perspective. Proverbs are approached as condensed discourse units whose meanings emerge through social and cultural contexts rather than as isolated linguistic structures. The study adopts a descriptive, analytical, and comparative design and draws on semantic-field theory, contextual theory, and selected pragmatic notions, particularly communicative intention, speech function, and shared cultural knowledge. The exploratory corpus consists of twelve proverb pairs distributed across marriage and family, neighbourhood, cooperation, work, livelihood, speech ethics, beneficence, social criticism, interpersonal boundaries, intergenerational responsibility, and cunning. The Egyptian data were mainly selected from Ahmad Taymur’s collection of colloquial proverbs and the attached master’s thesis on Egyptian folk proverbs, whereas the Iraqi data were drawn from Jalal al-Hanafi’s Baghdadi proverb collection and recent Iraqi scholarship. The analysis shows that semantic similarity does not necessarily entail identical cultural imagery. Some pairs preserve almost the same proverbial structure with limited phonological and dialectal adaptation, while others perform comparable social functions through locally grounded metaphors. The findings also demonstrate the centrality of family, neighbourhood, work, and reputation in both proverbial traditions, together with a recurring tension between agency and fatalism, solidarity and personal boundaries, and advice and social control. The study concludes that a sociolinguistic comparison of proverbs must integrate lexical meaning, context of use, pragmatic function, and cultural identity. Because the corpus is purposive and limited, the findings should be interpreted as exploratory rather than representative of all Egyptian and Iraqi regional varieties.
