Abstract

The present study explores the dualism of the human mind by analysing this Doppelgänger figure in James Hogg's The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner (1824). It is one of the most powerful literary works on psychic division, as Robert Wringhim, the novel's protagonist, faces a confrontation with his mysterious alter-ego, Gil-Martin, who could be a demon or a delusion of his own mind. But the novel does not end the ambiguity and leaves a lingering interpretive tension, which mirrors the problematic duality of the human beings. The study traces the history of the Doppelgänger concept in literature and psychology, from Jean Paul's invention of the term in 1796, through Freud's and Jung's theories of psychological dualities, to modern interpretive approaches that see the Doppelgänger as a relational pattern which cannot be limited to the absence or presence of its elements. The analysis looks at the double narrative structure of the novel, the Editor's narrative, and Wringhim's confession, and how this structure is connected to the thematic interest in the division and fragmentation. It takes the reader through Wringhim's transformation from a child who is isolated to a rightful murderer, and Gil-Martin's role as an other who represents the dark side of the self. What is found to be brilliant about the novel, then, is its inability to adjudicate between the two competing supernatural and psychological readings, leaving the reader to hover between the two possibilities, just as he or she is left between psychic duality and its own problematic nature. It is noteworthy that this study contributes to Arabic studies in several ways: First, in studying a novel not often discussed in Islamic literary criticism, and second, in showing the close bond between literature and psychology; literature is a tool that explores the depths of human consciousness, and sometimes predicts scientific discoveries. It also helps to advance the Doppelgänger theory by suggesting a multidimensional approach to the literary double's reading as a hermeneutic space with an open hermeneutic tension that does not allow the reader to apply the interpretive framework.
