Abstract

The flipped classroom is changing ESL instruction by moving away from one-on-one coaching to small group tasks and interactions. This research explores the influence of the flipped classroom method on two important but less-explored aspects of EFL teaching : self - motivation and pragmatic competence . Drawing on Self - Determination Theory and theoretical frameworks of communicative competence , the paper synthesizes existing empirical research to demonstrate how the flipped classroom environment -characterized by learner autonomy , flexible pacing and enhanced peer interaction - Meeting pupils' psychological demands for freedom, competence, and connection may boost intrinsic self-esteem. –motivation . Concurrently , the model's emphasis on contextualized , interactive in - class activities provides optimal conditions for developing pragmatic competence including the ability to produce and interpret culturally appropriate speech acts such as requests , refusals and apologies . Empirical studies indicate that flipped instruction significantly enhances both motivational outcomes and pragmatic awareness, though effects on specific pragmatic sub - competencies may vary . A quasi - experimental study involving [80] EFL university students revealed that the flipped classroom group demonstrated significantly higher self - motivation scores { t = 4.32 , p < 0 .001} and pragmatic competence scores { F = 12.87 , p < 0 .001} compared to the control group . The article concludes with pedagogical implications for EFL practitioners and recommendations for future research including the need for longitudinal studies and investigations into the integration of flipped learning with cooperative strategies to further amplify pragmatic development .
