Morphological research in the book "Interpretation of the strange words in the two Sahihs" by Al-Humaydi (488 AH)

Abstract

Scholars, including linguists and hadith scholars, have devoted considerable attention to explaining the vocabulary of the Prophetic hadith, particularly clarifying the etymology of unfamiliar words and their meanings within the context of the hadith, which are often difficult for some readers to understand. Among these scholars was Imam al-Humaydi, who undertook the task of explaining the unfamiliar words in the two Sahihs (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim). This explanation is extremely valuable, as he compiled the unfamiliar words from both collections into a single book. Al-Humaydi demonstrated a remarkable mastery of the language in elucidating the meanings of these words. The study of rare words and their explanation within the context of the Prophetic traditions, along with the resolution of their linguistic problems, was undertaken by Al-Hamidi. He relied on scholars who preceded him in this field, compiling the opinions of renowned linguists who are the primary authorities in explaining the meanings and connotations of words. This research also addressed the morphological aspect of these words, in which Al-Hamidi had his own opinion. He not only encountered and transmitted these ideas from previous scholars, but also offered his own clear opinion on them, providing corrections and clarifications. Sometimes I chose to focus on it, and at other times I chose to present it to researchers and scholars interested in studying the language of the Prophetic Hadith. I clarified its strengths and weaknesses, supporting or refuting al-Humaydi's statements, thus enriching our linguistic library with these studies that address the language of the Prophetic Hadith, a field that has not received itsdue attention inlinguistic studies .
