This study offers a reading of The Lost Compass by Najm Abdullah Kadhim, seeking to reveal the author’s vision of the American presence as a dominant force, both spatially and symbolically, laden with diverse and far-reaching meanings. Here, disorientation emerges through the spatial deployment of American characters in Arabic novels, as well as through the critical bewilderment that accompanies attempts to uncover their true direction and significance. The study also examines the relationship between the material and the symbolic dimensions embodied in those characters.
