Abstract

This study focuses on verbal connectors and their semantic function in the Maqamat of Qasim al-Abadi as fundamental grammatical tools that help construct textual cohesion and clarify contextual meaning within the maqama text. The study examines verbal connectors, including conjunctions, prepositions, and particles of causation, explanation, and condition. It seeks to trace these connectors in their various contexts and demonstrate their impact on linking discourse by revealing the mechanisms that contribute to cohesion within the maqama context, since these connectors do not function independently but rather operate as a unified text expressing a single meaning, which gives them coherence and textual consistency. The Maqamat of Qasim al-Abadi are characterized by high stylistic flexibility, eloquence in wording, and strong cohesion, which led us to study the connectors within them. These connectors are numerous and are employed with coherent presence and strong semantic force; therefore, they represent a fundamental element in the maqama text, as each particle carries a specific meaning within the sentence. Conjunction particles differ from prepositions, prepositions differ from causative particles, and causative particles differ from conditional particles and their consequences. Each particle has its own meaning that helps the context convey the intended meaning clearly.
