Abstract

This study aims to examine the subtle nuances of lexical variation in a set of commonly used expressions, particularly those denoting friendship. In general, such expressions convey the meanings of closeness and affection. Through careful analysis and close examination, it is demonstrated that each term carries an independent semantic value, reflected in fine-grained distinctions that differentiate it from other near-synonymous expressions. The study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach and draws its data from major Arabic lexicographical sources as well as works on lexical and semantic differentiation. These subtle meanings have been systematically identified and analyzed, leading to the conclusion that each lexical item possesses a distinct semantic specificity that sets it apart from related terms. The study is organized according to the lexical items under investigation and follows a lexicographic-analytical methodology, with the aim of producing a concise mini-lexicon that clarifies the subtle lexical and semantic distinctions among these expressions.
