The caliphate of Imam Al-Hasan (peace be upon him) represents one of the most significant turning points in Islamic history, marking the transition to a new phase following the conflict that led to the division of the Islamic state and exposed it to internal strife (fitnah). Managing the crises of that period required sound judgment and intellectual insight to confront the political, social, and economic challenges imposed by the prevailing circumstances. This perspective offers a renewed interpretation of that historical stage. Historical sources, however, have neglected many important details concerning the reality of this period, which was characterized by conflict followed by reconciliation. Consequently, Imam Al-Hasan (peace be upon him) was accused by both classical and contemporary historians of withdrawal, weakness, and political inexperience. The research problem lies in the inaccuracy of many historical accounts and the weakness of their chains of transmission, as they were recorded long after the events occurred and under the influence of political authorities hostile to the Prophet's Household (Ahl al-Bayt, peace be upon them). Furthermore, numerous narrations were distorted during the Umayyad and later the Abbasid periods, resulting in contradictions and historical misrepresentations. The study is organized into two main sections. The first section, entitled "The Caliphate of Imam Al-Hasan (peace be upon him)," examines: (1) the pledge of allegiance (Bay'ah) to Imam Al-Hasan, and (2) Mu'awiyah's position toward his caliphate. The second section, entitled "The Treaty of Imam Al-Hasan (peace be upon him)," discusses: (1) the causes and motivations behind the peace treaty, and (2) its outcomes and consequences. The research adopts a historical descriptive approach, combined with analytical and critical methods, to examine and evaluate the major historical issues and narratives related to this period.
