Abstract

Urban expansion is a significant urban phenomenon that directly impacts the structure of cities and the distribution of land uses within them. It is primarily linked to population growth, economic development, and the increasing demand for services and housing. This research aims to analyze urban expansion patterns and their impact on urban land uses by examining different forms of expansion and the factors influencing them. It also clarifies the consequences of unplanned expansion, such as urban sprawl, loss of agricultural land, and pressure on infrastructure and services. The research employs a descriptive and analytical approach, examining the concepts of urban expansion and urban land uses, and analyzing the relationship between urban growth and spatial shifts in land functions. The research also explores the role of modern technologies, such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing, in monitoring urban changes and supporting urban planning processes. The research concludes that urban expansion is a major factor in reshaping the urban landscape, and that improper management of urban growth leads to imbalances in land use distribution and the emergence of environmental and urban problems. The study emphasizes the necessity of adopting sustainable urban planning to ensure a balance between the requirements of urban growth and the preservation of natural resources.
