Abstract

This research explores the historical event known as the "Incident of the Elephant," a significant episode in pre-Islamic Arab history that is also referenced in the Holy Qur’an, specifically in Surah Al-Fil. The study aims to examine the event from historical, political, and religious perspectives by analyzing Islamic narratives found in classical sources of biography (sīrah), exegesis (tafsīr), and historical chronicles. It also provides a comparative and critical approach to assess the credibility and implications of these accounts while reflecting on the symbolic meaning of the Qur'anic version. The research is structured into three main chapters. The first chapter discusses the background of the Aksumite occupation of Yemen, the rise of Abraha to power, and his motivation for constructing the grand cathedral of Al-Qullays to rival the Kaaba. The second chapter details the campaign of Abraha against Mecca as narrated in Islamic sources, critically analyzing various reports, the role of Quraysh’s leadership, the miraculous stance of the elephant, and the collapse of the expedition. The third chapter addresses the symbolic and historical significance of the event, focusing on the preservation of Mecca’s religious centrality and its correlation with the birth of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in the same year. The study adopts an analytical-critical methodology, supported by a wide range of classical and modern Islamic sources. It concludes that the Incident of the Elephant was not merely a failed military endeavor but a pivotal turning point that reinforced Mecca’s spiritual authority and paved the way for a new era in the history of Islam.
