This study examines the interpretive problem surrounding the meaning of the word "touch" (mass) in the Qur'anic verse, "None touch it except the purified" (Qur'an 56:79), by exploring the major exegetical approaches that differ in identifying its intended meaning. These interpretations range from the literal, physical sense of touching to the metaphorical sense referring to the comprehension of the Qur'an's meanings, while some exegetes reconcile both interpretations. The study employs a comparative analytical method to examine the views of leading Sunni exegetes and scholars of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them), with particular attention to the lexical meaning of the term mass ("touch") and its relationship to the surrounding Qur'anic context. The study concludes that the diversity of interpretations stems from differences in exegetical methodologies and their approaches to the multiple levels of Qur'anic meaning. It further argues that the verse conveys meanings extending beyond a merely legal ruling to emphasize the majesty of the Qur'an and its profound epistemological dimensions, thereby demonstrating the richness of its meaning and the depth of Qur'anic discourse.
